The final thesis of higher professional studies consists of 61 pages, 24 figures, 9 tables, 39 references and 11 appendices.
The thesis analyzes the modernization possibilities of the machinery space of a Standard Flex 300 class patrol vessel by integrating a modern gas turbine into the existing power system. The aim of the thesis is to examine the technical and operational aspects of gas turbine installation based on scientific and technical literature as well as manufacturer data, and to assess its impact on the vessel鈥檚 reliability and tactical capability, while demonstrating the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the studies.
The object of the research is the Lithuanian Navy modular class patrol vessel Flyvefisken (StanFlex 300). The first part of the thesis examines the vessel鈥檚 purpose, current power system, main and auxiliary engines, their operating principles, and associated systems. The second part analyzes modern gas turbine technological solutions, their efficiency, integration requirements, and operational challenges. Calculations related to the installation of a new gas turbine are presented, including assessments of power balance, fuel consumption, thermal factors, and the impact on vessel stability. The original gas turbine concept is also discussed
The results of the thesis contribute to research on naval vessel modernization and energy efficiency by revealing the technical feasibility of integrating a modern gas turbine into the Stan Flex 300 class platform. The study highlights the potential added value to the vessel鈥檚 tactical performance and provides practical insights into improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

This final thesis analyses the causes of ship electrical power supply disturbances 鈥 partial disconnections and complete loss of electrical power 鈥 and presents measures for improving the reliability of the electrical power supply system on Ro-Pax ferries 鈥淰ictoria Seaways鈥 and 鈥淧atria Seaways鈥. The research problem is that even a short-term loss of voltage on board can disrupt the operation of control, navigation, pumping, ventilation, communication and safety systems. Therefore, it is important to evaluate not only the causes of failures, but also their development, the response of automation systems and the actions of the crew.
The aim of the thesis is to analyse the causes of electrical power interruptions and to propose measures that reduce their probability and consequences. The methods applied in the work include the analysis of scientific and professional literature, regulatory documents, ship technical documentation and information collected during practical training.
The results show that critical factors include disturbances in diesel generator and shaft generator operating modes, failure of the automatic voltage regulator, power deficit, protection settings, the response speed of the Power Management System (PMS), and crew actions during electrical power restoration. The proposed measures include regular inspection of the AVR, monitoring of the shaft generator bearing condition, testing of protective relays, PMS response, UPS batteries and the emergency generator. It is also recommended to review load disconnection stages, update crew action instructions and carry out periodic blackout prevention training. These measures can reduce the risk of electrical power interruptions, shorten power restoration time and improve the operational safety of the ship.

This professional bachelor thesis focuses on the modernization of the electrical drive system for the main cascade refrigeration complex of the fishing vessel 鈥楧irk Dirk鈥 (IMO: 8209171). The study centers on optimizing the starting processes of 160 kW compressors to protect motor windings from thermal overheating and minimize negative impacts on the vessel's power grid.
The objective is to justify the implementation of Soft Starters by comparing them with current starting methods, evaluating starting currents, voltage drops, and their effect on generator loading.
The results indicate that conventional starting methods cause significant current spikes that accelerate insulation aging and risk triggering a total blackout. Based on calculations (short-circuit current of 15.84 kA), it is proven that Soft Starters limit the inrush current to safe levels, ensure uniform thermal distribution in the windings, and maintain full system selectivity (response time 20 ms).
The conclusions provide technical arguments confirming that Soft Starter integration is the most effective measure for extending motor service life and enhancing the energy security of the 鈥楧irk Dirk鈥.

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the operational problems of marine scrubbers on general cargo vessels and modern solutions for their improvement, as well as to demonstrate the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge.
The study focuses on General Cargo-class vessels operating throughout the world's oceans. The first part of the thesis analyses international and local regulations. As global maritime regulations have shifted toward IMO2020 sulphur content restrictions, scrubber technology has become a viable compliance mechanism for ship operators. A comparison of various technologies is also presented, operational challenges are discussed, and the environmental and economic feasibility of scrubbers is considered.
The second part analyses how General Cargo vessels are particularly suitable for scrubber installation. These vessels often operate on heavy fuel oil, making scrubbers economically attractive. The choice of system depends on trade routes. Vessels operating primarily outside SECA zones benefit most from open-loop systems due to reduced operating costs, while vessels spending significant time inside SECA zones should use closed-loop or hybrid systems to ensure regulatory compliance.
The study also highlighted the importance of advanced technologies, such as IoT-based monitoring and predictive maintenance systems, which can improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
The results of the study contribute to the overall understanding that marine scrubbers represent an effective transition technology that helps ship operators comply with environmental regulations while maintaining economic viability. Hybrid and closed-loop systems offer balanced solutions for today's trading environment, and continuous technological improvements enhance both environmental and operational performance. Therefore, scrubbers remain an important part of the maritime industry's transition to decarbonization and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The aim of this final thesis is to analyse the possibilities for improving the energy efficiency of the RO-PAX ferry 鈥濴una Seaways鈥 by evaluating the operation of the installed fuel saving system, its operational performance, and its influence on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The object of the research is the RO-PAX type vessel 鈥濴una Seaways鈥 and the installed 鈥濬rese FuelSave鈥 system. The first part of the thesis analyses environmental pollution caused by ships during fuel combustion, discusses international requirements for exhaust emissions, and presents a comparison of different fuel saving systems. The operational features of these systems, their advantages, and possible technical limitations are also examined. The second part of the thesis describes the type of the ferry 鈥濴una Seaways鈥, its route, main power plant equipment, auxiliary engines, engineering systems, crew composition, and occupational safety requirements. Further calculations of fuel consumption, electrical energy demand, and emissions are carried out, and the influence of the 鈥濬rese FuelSave鈥 system on the operation of the FWD and AFT cooling circuit pumps is evaluated.
The results of the thesis show that the application of a fuel saving system makes it possible to reduce electrical energy demand, fuel consumption, and related emissions. Therefore, the system is beneficial from both economic and environmental perspectives.

The final thesis of higher professional studies consists of: 63 pages, 20 figures, 5 tables, 19 references, and 11 appendices.
The objective of this thesis is, based on scientific articles, technical documentation, and operational data, to analyze the operation of the fuel preparation system and potential malfunctions on the vessel 鈥淢ADICKEN,鈥 assessing their causes, operational characteristics, and impact on the operation of the main engines, while evaluating the operational and technical aspects of the system鈥檚 performance. The first part of the thesis analyzes the purpose, composition, and operating principles of the fuel preparation system, discussing the main components鈥攕eparators, filters, heaters, pumps鈥攁nd their interaction. International requirements related to fuel quality, emission reduction, and safe operation are also examined. The second part of the thesis analyzes failures in the fuel preparation system of the vessel 鈥淢ADICKEN鈥: the most common problems are identified (e.g., filter clogging, reduced separator efficiency, fluctuations in fuel viscosity, heating system malfunctions), and their causes and consequences for engine performance and fuel consumption are evaluated. Operational data is also analyzed, calculations are performed, and practical insights are provided.
At the end of the study, recommendations are provided for optimizing the operation of the fuel preparation system, preventing failures, and ensuring more efficient operation. The results contribute to increasing the reliability of the ship鈥檚 energy system, reducing fuel consumption, and meeting environmental requirements.

This bachelor's thesis addresses a critical operational inefficiency in marine maintenance: the reliance on scheduled, time-based manual lubrication for propulsion shaft line support bearings. Focusing on the Offshore Tug/Supply Ship M/V 'ATLANTICA CARRIER', this work analyses the high operational risks and low reliability associated with the existing Planned Preventive Maintenance strategy. Manual lubrication can result in either over-lubrication, which may damage the seals, or under-lubrication, which leads to accelerated wear and creates a potential failure point in the ships system.The core of this thesis is the complete engineering project for a technical modernization: the design and implementation of an automated, Condition-Based Maintenance system. This system utilizes vibration sensors installed directly on each intermediate support bearing to monitor its actual technical condition in real-time.The proposed engineering solution integrates Hansford Sensors vibration accelerometers and automated lubrication units into a unified control loop. The system provides targeted lubrication only when a specific bearing's vibration signature exceeds predefined alarm thresholds , which indicates the onset of friction due to lubrication degradation.

Fuel system failures are among the most frequently occurring malfunctions in marine propulsion systems. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to analyze the fuel injector failure of the Ro鈥揚ax vessel 鈥濺egina Seaways鈥 during the Klaipeda鈥揔arlshamn voyage, to identify its causes, and to propose preventive recommendations. A literature review was conducted to provide the theoretical background. The first part of the study, based on scientific literature, international conventions, and maritime law documents, examines marine fuel types and their characteristics, as well as different fuel system designs, operating principles, and common failures with their underlying causes. The second part focuses on the propulsion system of the vessel 鈥濺egina Seaways鈥, including its operation, crew structure, and organizational aspects. The influence of fuel system failures on engine operating parameters and vessel performance is assessed. The fuel injector failure is analyzed in detail, potential causes are identified, and repair procedures are discussed.
The results indicate that the primary causes of the failure are related to fuel quality, component wear, and insufficient maintenance practices. The findings suggest that implementing the proposed recommendations can improve fuel system reliability, enhance operational efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.

The aim of the thesis is to analyse main engine system failures caused by cavitation and erosion, determine their causes, evaluate their influence on operational reliability and provide corrective as well as preventive measures.
The research object is the main engine systems of an oil and chemical tanker and the components most frequently affected by cavitation and erosion during operation.
The first part of the thesis examines the physical mechanisms of cavitation and erosion, their interaction with corrosion, diagnostic indicators and the main ship systems where such damage occurs most often. The second part analyses engine room operation, describes the main engineering systems, evaluates typical failure causes, repair technologies and preventive measures.
The results of the thesis can be applied when assessing the technical condition of main engine systems, planning maintenance and reducing the probability of operational failures.
