Dean's Message
History of the Faculty
The Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was created by uniting the University鈥檚 exact sciences departments responsible for teaching general subjects throughout the University. The idea was strongly promoted by the then Rector, Prof. Habil. Dr E. K. Zavadskas, and considerable effort was made by the first Dean, Assoc Prof. Dr A. 膶iu膷elis.
In its founding year, the Faculty began offering its first degree programmes 鈥 Engineering Informatics at Bachelor鈥檚 and Master鈥檚 levels.
The Bioengineering Bachelor鈥檚 programme in the field of Biotechnology was introduced. The programme remains active and successful, and its graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies in two Master鈥檚 degree programmes.
The Laboratory of Parallel Computing was established.
The University admitted its first students to the Technomathematics study programme in the field of Mathematics.
The Information Technology Security Laboratory was established.
Prof. Habil. Dr Antanas 膶enys is appointed Dean of the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences.
The Faculty of Fundamental Sciences is led by the Dean, Prof. Habil. Dr Rimantas Belevi膷ius. In the same year, the Faculty introduced three new Bachelor鈥檚 programmes: Multimedia and Computer Design; Business Information Systems (informatics field of study); and Applied Statistics and Econometrics (statistics field).
In addition, three new Master鈥檚 programmes were launched: Nanobiotechnology (biotechnology field); Engineering of Solar Cells and Modules (materials technology field); and Information and Information Technology Security (informatics engineering field).
The FMF Student Representation launches the annual event 鈥淣ight to Unite鈥.
The Institute of Applied Mathematics was established.
The Faculty launched a new Software Engineering programme, which was chosen by 63 students in its first year.
Today, Multimedia and Computer Design and Software Engineering are the largest programmes in the Faculty, with over 100 new students enrolling in each programme annually.
The first student in Informatics undertakes an internship at NASA.
A student of Bioengineering wins a gold medal with the Lithuanian team at the international 鈥渋-GEM鈥 competition.
The FMF student team qualifies for the semi-finals of the World Programming Championship.
The Faculty of Fundamental Sciences is led by the Dean, Prof. Dr Dalius Ma啪eika.
